2025 Our Study Featured in the Bay State Banner
I led a recent study analyzing data from nearly 30,000 Massachusetts middle and high school students, looking at how school mental health staffing relates to student well-being. The data were collected by Dr. Randi Schuster and her team at the Mass General Center for School Behavioral Health, which conducts statewide school mental health surveys. Dr. Schuster also served as senior author on the paper.
The study was cited in the Bay State Banner’s coverage of Boston’s youth mental health initiative. We found that schools with more mental health staff helped buffer the negative effects of neighborhood adversity. Students in these schools reported fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and substance use. These results support efforts to expand access to school-based mental health professionals.
